Voices from the Storm: Day 3 Lessons

Warm-Up:

Write one paragraph: Imagine the biggest natural disaster that could happen in your city or town. Do you think the tragedies that befell the people in New Orleans could happen in your city? Why or why not?

Partners share their warm-up answers, and prepare to share these answers with class.

Discussion:

Teacher asks pairs to share warm-up answers, challenging simplistic or superficial responses with examples from Voices from the Storm.

Jigsaw/Cooperative groups:

Now form groups cooperatively. Split up the members of the expert groups evenly to form new groups. Each new group will have a person for each voice studied from Voices from the Storm.

Give all students a copy of the attached worksheet.

Presentation

Each group presents their “back in time” recommendations to New Orleans and Louisiana government leaders. Teacher models and encourages class to ask probing questions of presenters.

Closure

Revisit KWL chart – add to L and W sections.

Homework for the night of Day 3

If you’re not extending the assignment to include a persuasive letter assignment, simply modify the instructions on the homework sheet, and take off the last set of questions, after question 5. Clearly, modify the location and disaster for your school’s city or town.
